Building my first ever vw trike

Thursday, October 18, 2007, 06:58 AM CST [Motoring]

Well as i`ve said in my earlier statement about myself having a motorcycle accident in July 2003.. I got very frustraited seeing other people riding their bikes and having loads of fun....until one day up at Stanmore i was working up on the spinal unit...went outside and started talking to a guy in a chair and he happened to mention that he owns a trike.. We started talking about his trike and he was telling how he gets on and off blah blah blah you know the normal stuff..To cut a long story short he came over to my place to show me the trike...I dont know who was more exicited me or my wife, my mate had a Rewaco Trike and i thought i wouldnt be able to get on that in a million years, but russ showed me how to get on it...from that day on i was hooked.

On the 16th August 07 i decided to buy a vw beetle, and this is what i decided to use.. it`s a 1972 1300cc beetle and only paid £500.

I started to crack on with the work...I took the basic stuff off first lights, indicators, and the wings...that was a challange in its self because as a spinal injury patient the balance of some of us is pretty poor...i must say though my balance has improved over the years..so tried and i got the wings off (yehaa) i did it without hurting myself.

My brother-in-law Chris and I set out for our next task....
We had to take the body off, normally to do this you would have to take the engine out but suprise suprise  it would`nt come out because of a bolt the someone had put in.  So with an extra pair of hands we managed to prise the body off the floor...I must point out though i was as about as much use as a chocolate tea pot ...it was very frustraiting for me because before my accident i had been in the garage trade for about 15 years so i used to do this kind of stuff standing on my head.
Once we got the body off i could be left on my own for a little bit to get on with things ..so the next day I took the engine out and took the little bits and bobs off..
The next day Chris came over and cut the chassis in half so i could unbolt
the front beam and all the other bits.
Once we got the chassis all cleaned up..my father-in-law took it up to a company in Loughborough called BudgetTrikes.co.uk  where they welded the main frame bracket onto the chassis for me because the whole unit has to be put on a jig to make sure the main frame is completely true and straight, and also i needed to buy the fibre
     glass body kit..

I had a motorcycle accident back in July 2003 and found i had broken my back at level T5 and was told the usual.....After spending 9 months in Stanmore Hospital ....Got home and then realised the doo doo hit the fan and had to get on with life, even more now because my girlfriend was about to have a baby. Its amasing how fast you have to grow up and stop feeling sorry for myself  and telling myself that there is a baby that needs me now...Get on with it.........and so i did.

I decided to learn how to drive all over again and found that when i wanted to go out shopping or goto the cinima, to find that some toerag had parked in a Disabled Parking Bay without displaying a Blue Badge, and nine times out of ten it when all the bays are full and i am trying to find one....To make matters worse i had my daughter with me and that to was a challange aswell...I started to get fed up with the usual abuse like "if your disabled you should`nt be driving" or "drop dead you cripple" or "im just getting some fags" and when you say but i need this space so i can go shopping they say "F*** off"... I put up with this for about a year and during that time i had a mate who did martial arts and asked him to teach me (phillapino stick fighting) mmmm and it works when my balance is ok.

I decided a year later, enough was enough and so design a website aimed to name and shame these type of people who misuse these bays.....The idea is for people to take a photo of the cars and leave a leaflet on the windscreen and go...No hassle and no confrontation with the offenders...

Its been running about 9months now and its slowly taking off now but trying to get people to take photos well say no more ..lol......oh yeah forgot to say the name of my site it`s called.... http://www.space-d-out.co.uk
