    110708 Deep stuff

I had a deep session with Cheryl where she displayed again, why I think so much of her. She is a very useful friend. After this motivating time, she then asked me to do a favour for her. All I had to do was buy her brother’s birthday present. www, click click, bang. At least I was able to give something back.

As if I didn’t realise it had been motivating, I then did a 2 walk with Cheryl , the first time in years!!

We went up to Chris ex-Windows (ex windows because his windows have been normalised) to admire the work his wife Jenn has had done on the rendering. It looks good, but talk about whingeing , will he ever be happy with someone else’s work?

MJ and JW went out to the Swan at Hoxne in the BMW. Food was OK with a “Marie” salad i.e. basic, too much pasta in lasagne but good beer for JW. The service was very good, up to the payment point where we had to wait yonks. Paper run out, battery weak, bla bla bla. We discussed my attendance at a Cromer tennis tournament in the summer to support his boy.

    100708 Chris Fish

Chris arrived as normal Cheryl to sell his fish waters at Cheryl 16.00. I joked with him that by the time he reached us, all the good fish was gone. To take the wind out of my sails he then produced a £10 piece of my favourite fish, halibut, that he had “put aside” for me. Talk about feeling guilty about what I had just said………..

Roger, the man who recruited me into Mars came for an overnight stay. He bought a box of “Celebrations” competing, “Quality Street”. Out of Mars, we all change

Rick Clegg made a small detour of 90 mins each way from M11 to come and see us. It was great to see him and fab to hear about the successes of his kids.

    090708 tax RETURN

I JUST COMPLETED MY TAX RETURN. In terms of numbers filled in, its not very complicated. In terms of spreadsheet manipulation its quite complicated. The last number to receive is the official annual average exchange rate for Swiss Franc. Now, having printed out all my worksheets, I filled in the Circa 10 numbers, signed the form, detailed my workings on the box provided and copied the form for me to keep. Now H has to fold the form, put in the envelope and post it. Its due on 31st October, I’ve done it a bit early but its done, posted and OFF my list of things to do.

Cheryl affected by rain just 1 lap.

    080708 Egg smashing.

My new mate, Steve, arrived with my pumped tyres for my chair. He slowly didn’t get out of his (poor farmer) brand new Golf GTI as could be normally expected. He explained that he had had a work accident and smashed 4,000 eggs as the shelving unit fell on his legs. He was rushing off to see the rugby club physio. He phoned a friend to ask what he should do with 4,000 smashed eggs? Fancy an omelette ?

He kindly brought a load of CDs for my I-tunes. Goldfrapp was new and very good. 2 of their CD s didn't allow me to copy them.

Marc Rappers came for a morning of lads time. We went for a walk and got soaked and stayed under a huge oak tree to minimize the impact of the heavy rain. 30 minutes later, 30 minutes sun and we were dry !!

    070708 Rappers Schlappers Dappers

One of my generous friends, Marc, came round to make a plan. He was having a weeks holiday and fancied doing something tomorrow morning. He will be here at 10.00. he is a rare friend. Rareties list.

1                     He has 3 kids, each beautifully behaved. They are a pleasure to be around. (rarely to be heard from my mouth).

2                     He has a job which basically pays him hourly, but takes Fridays off so that he can do adult stuff with his wife, without the interruption of their kids. Often they go out for lunch but frequently they jus go out for a walk or jog. Investying time in adult stuff is something I rarely see.

3                     He was the only adult to come to our house warming party WITHOUT kids.

4                     He earns well but spends on living, eating, drinking rather than gadgets, holidays, cars etc

Steve came round for a JD young meal. He is 40 and living the student life of going out, eating, drinking and being chased by women. Understandably he is thoroughly enjoying it. Good lad.

060708 Glad I was wearing long trousers

Today was the tractor fest. 95 women and their tractors doing a day route (inc lunch break of course). I was asked to sponsor June Thorpe a month go and yesterday Mandy (randy Mandy?) phoned to talk “Meatloaf” but quickly broke into “would you sponsor me ?” …”oh OK then”. I was quite looking forward to going out to support them but it was rained off.

    Cheryl 1+1 then 1+1

050708 Nice mild but warm weather

As we are going out tonight I decided to wear long trousers. Since it was forecast to be showery I decided to stay in and potter rather than visit Norwich with H on a shopping trip. I asked for hr to leave lunch to avoid us both stressing about her return.

One of the chores was to pay Mark and Cheryl. I paid Cheryl without hitch.as I searched my short, cica 10 payees I couldn't find Mark. Barclays had somehow deleted him from my list of payees. I phoned the normally very helpful 0800 premier banking team. They couldn't help me sothey suggested I talk to their online time, located in Bombay. You can imagine the rest.

“We automatically clear out those not used in 12 months” “Well I used him last week.”

Did I care ? was it worth the stress of trying to find what had happened? NO NO, so I phoned Mark and re-got his details.

    040708 Hippie Chicks

Maria came around to sit in the meadow and do Hippie Chick stuff. If you want to understand this, then I recommend you talk to H.

I phoned Ipswich Theatre to book my 020808 Australian Pink Floyd tickets. After waiting 15 minutes for an answer, the explanation of “Will Young comes to Ipswich”, seemed a good one !! They insisted on giving me a carer ticket. Any ideas who I should offer it to? .

DP came tonight to “care” for me. The DVD “New Country for ld men” disappointed. He fell asleep and I was calling for him…but no reaction. Eventually he came in to tuck me in. I then slrept, missed Ross and awoke to Kill Bill.

    030708 Garden Open Day feedback

How professional a “Post project” feedback meeting to follow and a collection of ideas is being collected. A thoroughly professional end to a very well organised day.

Do you remember the day when you phoned the local tax office, got a bespectacled old lady and were duly served. Now IF you can find a number, it will be 0845 (chargeable from portables) and you will be kept waiting for minutes “We are sorry to keep you waiting…..”. You ask for a form that was sent two weeks ago. Oh says expert, it goes 2nd class and it can take 2 weeks to arrive. Then an hour later, the postman arrives with it !!!

Rain stopped play. Mark carefully sprayed roundup around the trees after we had consulted Metcheck for rain reports. Then at 1300, bang on forecast, the rain arrived. Ran stopped me splitting more primula AND the last hour was wasted. Oh well, we are governed by the wind, when we chose to spray.

As I have said many times, Man of Leisure MOL, only has one busy… ish day per week. Its Thursday. Today on top of my normal visitors, farmer Steve came for 20 minutes and cut the path.

Next to arrive was Ray Chapman to talk about the pavilion by the pond. His first comment was that at a surprising 58, identified my Australian Pink Floyd t-shirt.  He had seen them 15 times.

As my stomach is far from well, H has fixed up for some analysis. The starting point is to send some poo to USA by FedEx, so I had to stay in to give them this package. Joy.

    020708 Good news

My UK bank has received the money !!! 24 hours amazing. Apart from, weekend breaks, will it be that quick every month ?

Self Assessment paying in slips. It’s due 3107 and I still not got it. Can I find a non 0845 no? They have deleted all the local numbers e.g. in Ipswich. wonder whether they deleted the people and jobs too?

Cheryl managed a very lerthargic MJ to 1+1. this was after 4 successive 1+1 then 1+1, none needing support, knee holding or any other reason for Cheryl support. I offered her my veg production and she took lettuce, dill coriander and some black currants.

    010708 Transfers from Switzerland

As we speak my, newly set up, standing order is winging its’ way here. I wonder how long before it gets here?

Drove to Holt (90 mins) to see Sarah my 1985 girlfriend. Her kids, Cloe and Rory, made the day. Apparently me getting as kiss from 5 year old Cloe was very rare. It was great to see her and great she had invited us to see her.

Amazingly H wasn't expected to cook lunch (rare) and as we arrived at 12.00, she, family and parents were immediately ready (unheard of) to walk the short distance to the small park.  What was very impressive was the quality of the salads (pine nuts, peach, brie) and bread (French and beer bread) which we dug into. Even H dug in. As pudding, we proposed ice creams in the café. But apart from the cramped space, the doors, the +30 deg heat and the inflexible serving suggestions it was very friendly. We retreated to another café where the kids got our cones and we sat under a tree and chatted. It is still amazing to me how we have such different memories from that short 5 months of our lives.

    300608 Health

I have a new member of our helpers. Richard came highly recommended (By Bo amoungst others). He has, so far, worked well on getting the barbed wire, previous pony fences, out of the hedge. He had told me of back pains but today it got worse. He stopped after 2 hours and retired home. At 17 he needs to take this rather seriously and start the long road to fixing it before it disables him. He has a long action list, about which I avoid the word “should”. College, smoking, life etc are on the list.

    290608 Sunny Sunday

My annal mate DJK took 3 moves to get his car into an area which allowed him to wash the car, despite 2 hosepipes.

Whilsrt we were out, he shot into the Post Office to buy 2 5kg packs of flour. I thought it was quite impressive that Dickleburgh was the source of the Cardiff man’s bread flour. How naive ….it was because it was chesap. How long have I known him? 30 years!! He has changred becausew he bought me san ice cream. He cooked a good meal and at the end of a fine weekend he left and made his way to his sister.

    250608 Dodgy piss bags

I was about to go out when I noticed that my shorts were damp. Now was this due to my hand washing or a leaking piss bag? I got on my way and it was clear it was the valve above the bag. I could see my pee gurgling through.

I phoned up H, she was in Bury. I phoned Bob and no answer. I sat there with my sheba towel absorbing my flowing piss. It was warm and an hour later Bob came and very easily changed my piss bag.

Whilst I was there , Gardener-man came down the drive and in his white-van he was trying to sell  me box plants and wooden garden furniture.

Cheryl came for my first physio for a while and I managed to do 4*1 laps, which both pleased and amazed me. After this hard work, she cooked me a “snack of monkfish. Gorgeous. She had bought me seeds for my raised bed. Now I can grow spring onions for spring.

    240608 Another sunny day

Now what am I supposed to think ? Yesterday DP counted the knotweed shoots at 6. today GP couldn't even find them.?. still not 100% clear we have them. I will send cuttings to GP when we zap them.

After fiddling around in a sea of indecisiveness I finally called “Clarkes of Walsham” to order stuff for the raised bed. My agreed strategy is to sort the bed out then order and fix the paving after. It seemed very technical when DP did his professional drawings.!! Problems then come.

Firstly the sleepers we have are a different size and colour. I soon gave up trying to match them. Secondly they dot cut then anymore. What amazed me was the unavailability of a 5 mm masonry drill. (later DP “oh great technical man” explained that the imperial equiv meant that their product list will have had 5.5 mm and so they saw no 5mm as my Swiss one !) It will all be delivered tomorrow.

The “problem” with a very good friend likedp, comes whn you ry to use my unskilled Grasham to do things. Firstly the tools I have are not always the best, the newest of in the best nick. “Jut let me do it” is too easy to bend too. I prefer to ask him to do the skilled stuff.

I phoned Neil at BMW to give him a bollocking. He ½ took the ind wind out of my sails by saying that the  1 sq cm piece of plastic that had fallen off the £29,000 car was being repainted. He promised to call H to stun her with the good news. Suprise not…he didn't.

Grizz came for food. On his insistence he brought the meat. We didn't have the heart to tell him we hadn’t eaten his chosen pork for 25 years.

    230608 Weather improving.

The week’s weather looks very MJ friendly at 15 degrees but sunny.

As if I didn't understand already, money motivates.

As if I didn't understand already, teenagers wanting to get on well in life WILL work.

As if I didn't understand already, people don’t need to work QUICK to be working HARD.

As if I didn't understand already, fair days work for a fair days pay means harmony.

On recommendation from a number of people I thought I’d give Graham a try. He came to do a number of “blue” asks on my list. These tasks are unskilled and he did well, extending and clearing up the poo areas and giving the trees their annual 5,000 mile service of taking the straps to the posts, loosening removing straps. Seemed to get the hang very quickly and ii hope he is keen to continue. The more he works here, I’m sure the split between green-skilled and blue-unskilled will become hazy.

For the second time since the accident I took cash out of the machine in Harleston. For the first time I was slightly disappointed by my fish meal, this time smoked haddock, at JD Youngs. Steve was great company and can't really accept that he is attractive to women or what to do about it !!

After a great party with H’s riends I was tolo they weee coming 4 luch. Yippee ….girls tpo flirt witrh

    220608 Mervyn’s 60th birthday party

After last nights stomach explosions, which poor H had to clear up, I was very nervous to go out much more than see my raised bed and steam water my cuttings. Bramble confused me by demanding to play ball, but indecisively decided to run after the balls…...she is very fussy about which ball she will chase. I had no breakfast and virtually no lunch.

We were picked up by Mark, my gardener, who is also a taxi driver, his Citroen car was easy to get into, with wide doors and a far back seat. To get out, with a high seat, was also easy. We went to Mervyn’s house off the Thetford road, near Roydon. His house is on a big plot with many external buildings AND the hugest pond you ever saw. Not a lake, more an Ocean. His garden was well managed and a huge Penstemon particularly impressed me.

We sat outside in the bright sunshine, accompanied by the gusty wind. At 6 we were guided into a huge shed in which the catering and booze was laid out. H’s gym friends and Mick the personal trainer were great company and we had a great laugh and enjoyed the background of the noisy Jazz band.

    210608 Weather and party planning

I was woken and helped up by Bob to get into watching England getting thrashed by the All Blacks

In the evening, Mr and Mrs Rappers came for dinner. For 4 hours I didn't stop laughing. Great fun.

    200608 Avon bulbs

I had discussed my bulb list with Mark the gardener and his only comment ? You haven't bought enough tulips. Thus I approached the brochure with the intention of getting some more. So what to get? H fashion advice was “Dark and bright” colours…so I went for reds, purples, mauves. Eventually, decisions made, I phoned them. I referred to a picture in the brochure with crocus AND tulips together in flower.

I asked their advice on pairing up and they said they would research then phone back, which they duly did. The only ones I chose were the red tulips with white crocus as shown in the brochure. Nothing else seemed as good.  Having made a big order initially then doubling it, I think I will get the rest from DGC in the autumn.

Marion, my newly moved in, Scottish gardening, neighbour popped in for a chat and coffee. Nice lady. I phoned “Mulch Mark” my tree surgeon, about him returning to clear out the West hedge of even more Elm , nearly dead, but very tall, dead trees. He announced that he was another bloke whose wife has walked out of him 2 weeks ago. My list of 15 broken marriages is dominated by female decisions and infidelity rather than blokes and their secretaries. Life has moved on.

Bo and I went to Ipswich for our monthly cinema and pasta evening. I chose “Teeth” based on a R5 recommendation. We were disappointed. As for our pasta….gorgeous.

Whilst we were there I was blanked by god-daughter, Sarah. It was weird. Her brother and grand-father came over to introduce themselves. I had my back to the restaurant preferring to face the wall and just assumed that it was only the two of them and that Sarah wasn’t even there. As they moved away I asked Bo,  who confirmed that YES Sarah was there. In the morning I called her to tell her how pissed off I was, with her

    190608 White van man/Postman

Not driving, really motivates me to seek out delivery from “whitevan man” or postman. All of them are great at delivering packages onto kitchen surfaces, opening post etc and having chats too.

Paul/Grizz phoned and I told him the **** he was in with H after not turning up on Tuesday. He tried to phone her, but kept calling me instead. Whilst there looking at roadside sales of vegetables, my new friend Marion, climbed over me and emptied the stall. None left 4 me. I commented thus in my normal subtle diplomatic way. Marion took the hint and to seek further volume, knocked on the door and Andy looked at me and shut the door. Friendly

Mark the gardener was here to plant all of my recently purchased from Garry & Mary. The earth in MJ bed really looks very fertile, hopefully as a result of the masses of horse poo we laid on it. Chris-Fish turned up and I bought loads of halibut.

Following conversations with Steve Thorpe (son of Lake man, Peter and mother June), I had called a recently laid-off lad, 17 year old Graham. “When can you come up?”…….”Now”…good start and impressive.  His dad bought him up here to talk. With their 6 month old shepherd dog, I saw a normal sized young man, very keen to earn some money. We agreed to start Monday morning on clearing up the barbed wire. Negotiating his salary was not his strength, so after finding he was earning £6 per hour, I offered £7 per hour. Let’s hope he delivers.

    180608 Buying some land.

I had not really talked to my neighbour above pleasantries, in the 3 years we have lived here. We have never shared a meal and the highlight was inviting the whole family for coffee and cakes over our first Christmas 2004. In the meanwhile communication has been limited to us screaming at each other whilst he cleared up Donkey poo. One morning I was out with Bramble and Alan was strimming his roadside hedge. A quick “Hi” suddenly developed into a 30 minute conversation on his donkeys, the use of his western block, his external nursery etc. he never asked ONE question.

Once home, I thought “If he doesn't want them, will he sell them to me?”. To improve my chances he had agreed us spraying his thistles and pulling my fence down, now that the hedge has grown to 4 feet. I phoned him and he “Well no” he wasn’t insulted and I told him to put the ideas in his “Look at in 10 years” list. Rumours locally that his house is for sale, but there is no evidence of it. .

    1706 Backstreet passes

I finally saw Garry & Mary socially chez moi!!. They came to deliver my “invoice” and £20 for the commission on the sale of £200 plants. (so it wasn’t a bad day for them). They clearly don’t want to come in and have a coffee as they seem very nervous around us. I wonder why people treat us as so different to them? Sort of “Upstairs Downstairs” sort of thing

I trekked out for a walk with Bramble and only got as far as Mick & Fiona who have a Golden lab aged 8 months. With a pond in the middle of their garden the dogs did their best to exhaust each other and cover Mick with muddy water.

Mick is only 53 but he has retired from his previous profession of Stage Manager on music tours. To celebrate his memories he proudly showed off his very extensive and impressive “Backstage passes” 30 of which were framed on each of 7 frames. So there were over 200 examples over the 70-80-90-00’s. Guess how many tours I had been to? Well 2 definitely !!! “U2 Joshua Tree” AND “David Bowie Glass Spider”…both gigs I saw at Milton Keynes Bowl. This summed his clients up. Mostly bigger than my favourite bands. He had two others of my favourite bands which I could not be sure…Undertones 1980 and Cure 1983….was I there? Who knows? I fear a few more conversations with him, which we will enjoy, but would bore everyone else.

I entered Bramble and I in the “Rushall Dog show”, after agreeing with DJK what we would do that weekend.

June came round to gain sponsorship for her breast cancer supporting Sunday afternoon tractor drive. Was she another one nervous of being here ?

On top of our normal guest for Tuesday night, DP , H had invited Grizz/Long beard to eat with us only on Sunday night. By 19.30 it was clear he wasn’t coming so we ate without him. Another one nervous of being here ?

DP was very lively and seemed to be discussing something with H which clearlt exclusded me.

    1606 Birthday

Well birthday lists work “!”!! I got music dvds of Cure, Faithless. Chemical Brothers and Clash. Good stuff. I also got cds that were on my wishlist which included Brett Anderson, BBC soundtrack for “Ashes to Ashes” and “Life on Mars” plus DVD for the recent “Wild China”

John Seeley continued his 20 year tradition of finding me an unusual BT interesting book. I will really enjoy my furthering education this time on Afghanistan. He has bought me some great books on this part of then world. Good stuff

H really had to bend DP’s arm for him to share my birthday lunch. So I had half portions of monkfish and beans. He really is a great friend.

1506 Open day : looking forward to it and it didn't disappoint !!

What a fantastic day. The forecvast was sunny cool and a few showers. I decidsed on a shorts!! Brave !

Gary and Mary were here at 10.00 to set up their plant stall. The more they unloaded the more I thought it was professional, large and much choice. During the day I didn't see much action for them. At the end ofd the day I asked them how it went. The key question was “Will you come back in two years, for our next one?”……”        Yes”….and that answer way good enough for me.

The official day started at 11.00 and with everyone being urged to go to the church to buy their tickets, it was 30 minutes later before our first guest arrived. Welcomed by a short wearing, piss bag on leg using, MJ with a short “Welcome to Mulberry Barn”. People looked at the meadow, now at its peak, and scarcley glanced at the beds!!

One of the key attractions, for our garden and maybe for the whole event was Sophie and limping Jade offering kids horse rides. I was no0t able to get over and see the destruction of the meadow, so I asked DP to take my camera an take a few shoots for me. Brilliantly they raised £36

Next was Carolyn selling ice cream on behalf of CAB. She bought £42 “home-made” ice cream made by a local itaslian firm. She managed a £37 profit at £1 for each ice cream. She just about sold out but I think the price was too low.

In the evening, for 19.00, we and supporters were invited to the party at Martin and Jane’s manor house. We had managed to persuade Sally, Paul and kids to attend. We met up with Bob and Ruth at MB and Sophie pushed me over there. It was great top meet a few new faces, highlighted by Marian and ex-professional union star from Harlequins, Ian. This Scottish couple are great additions tom our village.

Paul, “Long beard” or now “Grizz” was there and insisted on taking me on a tour of the garden. Could he be the replacement for Duffy ? who was about the back down/resign in preparation for the birth of his second child.

A photographer, with all the gear, turned up to see David’s NG kit car. He then tried to persuade him to take some photos in the meadow.

Two grumps  People driving down the drive rater than using the bus or walking. Friends visitimng and NOT offering to pay.

Sophie then gave H and I leather wrist bands from her recent Turkish holiday. Very generous. I think the first pressie our friends’ kids had bought us with their own money. Fantastic.

Lessons learnt:  Signs for the walk behind garage AND Cheaper plants looking less professional OR MJ stuff for sale. MJ do the plants ??

    140608 Language teaching

One of the reasons, I think, I was asked to be a school governor, was to help them with introduction of foreign language teaching to primary school kids. Call me sensitive if you will but I really get the feeling the head is nervous, bureaucratic etc on this. He is normally “Adult “ on this. Hem seems to be reluctant to take the lead and throw the rules away and forsake traditional, crap a failing language learning

The aim for the kids, I think, is to instil a pleasure, enjoyment and lack of fear, a sense of fun in learning a “strange” language. He has missed a great opportunity with the European Football championships to introduce both French and German. Get them used to hearing foreign sounds, radio, TV, music etc. Mimicking sounds and not grammar learning. To get used to making fools of themselves when they are young, fearless and not yet image conscious. They will learn the best, the younger he starts.

Two days before my birthday, I was interrupted from concentrated PC work to go outside and welcome the delivery of 2 of my birthday pressies. DP had his trailer attached to his Land Rover, and within it a pallet of concrete paving blocks good lad. Now that’s a good job for Duffy

Then I was led, hands over my eyes to meet “Fred” my crouching statue, now outside my shower window, to be moved to the pond………………….maybe

    1306 Bramble is “Dog napped”

Writing this might make me cry. Bob and I went around the plot to investigate whether he could cut the grass with his mower, and how long it would take.  Bramble, of course, came around for the tour too. When we crossed to the fence hedge, she was zapped by the Petsafe security wire. We commented her re-action but basically left her to it (whatever “it” means)

    Inside, da-di-da, 2 hours passed

“Where is Bramble “one of us asked….we went outside to look, call, rattle her food bucket….NOTHNG. Not a whimper, whine, bark. Started to worry. As we’d seen her zapped, how could she of got off the plot? Had someone nabbed her ? I phoned the Police.. I phoned the direct no of Cyndy (jogger) or Ian. Neither was there

“If my dog has been nabbed, what happens next?”

I spoke to Francis who did her best to calm me and asked me to call before her change of shift at 0700. As Bob was leaving JW turned up and resumed without success searching for Bramble by circum-navigating the plot……where was she? By now we were getting hungry, looking forward to Half Moon portions of fish and chips.

Ruth phoned and suggested bringing the borders to see if they could find her. Suddenly we saw them at the end of the drive and

    “My god she is here!”…

heart flutters, nerves…could they really have found her? And that easily? I could hear Bob calling her and then he moved 5m and picked her up. put her on the drive and then she sprinted down towards us by the garage,. She was as excited, relieved and happy to see her as visa-versa. What the hell had happened for 4 hours ?

Post note/ : we think she was stuck between the zap zone and the rabbit fence. She had reverted to dog instinct cos she was scared. She must have heard us, but she was terrified to move. Why she didn't even bark, I will never know.

1206 Strange but interesting Blogs : Nazi bunkers

An amazing blog following the Jersey resident who has discovered a Nazi bunker in this back garden.

Customer service is defined by many things. People’sd beliefs about “What is right”, commercial interest and what the boss wants to name three. Chris-Fish changed his route to come and see us at 10.00. This detour to our house was necessary because I'm out at 15.00 to the wind farm meeting at the time he would normally come. He detoured gladly sand it was much appreciated. Wewent into a jewellers recently to think about  H’s Xmas pressie. Yes, birthday already sorted and this was just an idea whilst in Norwich to buy DP a Rolex. Maria dutifully howed us her necklace andexplained that nother customer had trid  to buy it off her neck. She had refused.

Today was the Tivetshall windfarm presentation at their village hall. What a waste of time. It’s a shame Lucy wasn’t there to liven it up. Her Northern Irish tones and directness would have been great. She says that only we English accuse her of bluntness and that its normal in Ireland. I can't judge that.

    1106 Wanker banks

Cheryl  came for a poor physio of 1 and 3*1/2. I know its `a helluva weak excuse, but I was put off by H watching and playing ball with Bramble.

Off to Norwich for a few pressies for my god son, his sister and his mum (my fathers’s cousin’s daughter). Both the kids got chocolate from Hotel chocolate, where as they were serving hazelnut choccies, I didn't join the feeding frenzy of the freebies as normal.

We speedily moved on to the jewellers to pick up some repairs.

Once home we had a great cabbage salad and then got fixed up for a Swisstrak trip. Bugger!! the battery was only half full. Planning only a short trip because of it, I got ¼ way on a short trip before the battery gauge started dropping down too quickly. I turned around and as I entered my drive, the battery gauge was flashing and beeping. Thinking the batteries were knackered, DP offered to check the charger. Before we even got screwdrivers ready, he discovered that someone (Gordy?) had turned the switch off.

Money from CH took Thursday order to Tuesday arrival. How come it takes so  long?

    1006 Impressive women.

Fiona Ryder, our new neighbour came to visit. I had predicted H would like her. I was right. She is a borne entrepreneur, builing up and selling businesses. She was a very impressive woman

CAB fund raising was the sole topic tonight of a new group I’d been asked to chair. Dianne was surprisingly aggressive. They certainly didn't like my joke.

The fox and goose phoned back to confirm the date for lunch on H’s birthday.

    0906 stomach

After more thoughts about what makes me have scvummy bottom inb the UK, but not during one month rehab in CH, I decided to stop taking my vitamins. I will wait for a monbth and see what happens. After last nightrs gut explosion and colonial cleatr out I decifded NOT to tske Movicol for at least a day either.

As stomach not stable I decided to not go to the governors meeting where I had expected to spesak about the lack of language teaching. I also persuaded JD to bring bread and cheese instead of going out. Lovely blue cheese and great French bread with a chewy crust.

    0806 Jez is good value.

DP woke me and got me up for breakfast and a shower.i have NEVER seen someonber curt brea d vso professionally. I wrongly assumed he’d got a machine to cut it so well.

Cheryl came for another poor session and after a poo we got on our way to Jez in Ipswich with Bramble. En route we found ourselves in the middle of the “Tour de Hasleworth” bike race. Despite seeing NO bikes we were forced by the nice policeman to make a major detour to Yoxford .An hour late (early compared to our hosts normal practice) we arrived hungry for our well prepared, healthy and suitably under-cooked stir fry and pasta. It was gorgeous. Well chosen beans, chicken, peppers and pasta.

Jez is a handsome, kind, thoughtful and generous mate. The mystery is simply why he is single?. He is living in the middle of Ipswich's single shag palace land. His shaven head and extremely fit muscle bound torso must give an impression that he is a fug. (thug). How false. He would make both a fab partner and father. At 40 he is unfortunately reluctant to take on a girl with “baggage”. How many of us, >40, have NO baggage?

    0706 DP paying again

Dianne and Gordie left just before lunch after leaving me a plate of salad. There was nothing wrong with the salad, it was very healthy and nutritious, but it wasn’t an H salad with a different taste in every corner or under every bit of lettuce.

DP arrived an hour early, hungry and keen to go out As normal JD Youngs didn't disappoint, with my Red Snapper, DP’s curry and Jo’s pork medallions. We all had good puddings too. This time there was 2 of them, so surprisingly for DP, I accepted , without a whimper his “My turn” offer to pay!! At least I managed to pay for the fish on Thursday. Who could ever disentangle all the cash movements to work out who is in credit? As long as he is happy then so am I !!.

    They saw me to bed.

    0606 Google Earth

Cheryl came for a session. It was rained off.

Having bought Halibut from Chris-Fish on Thursday, Cheryl finally phoned her fish order in, only to find him gone. I recommended she called him on the way home as he would probably make a small detour to her, as he knows she would make a significant purchase. She didn't disapoiint. She spent £40 on the rest of the halibut and also some monkfish.

Gordon / Diane have been very generous to come and spend Thursday and Friday night with me to help whilst H went to Alicante with Sonia and Karen. Known since Feb 1989, my first day at Mars in Kings Lynn, they have visited frequently even just after my accident whilst I was in hospital. She is the only member of the “MJ is a great boss” club. That does NOT say I was great, merely that there are even worse!!

In the afternoon I introduced them to the wonders of Google Earth. Gordon quickly picked it up and phoned one of his friends about the scars in his field, where he had dumped some waste. Could be a useful use for identifying scars on the landscape.

    June begins

    Friday, June 27, 2008, 04:29 AM [General]

    0506 Jackie

I phoned my “cousin” in Switzerland and the phone was answered by a 6 year old, Alliana. I have talked to her face-face and on the phone about 6 times. After about 30 seconds she worked out who it was. I nearly cried I was so happy. Her English is good but her primary language is Swiss-German.

    0406 my new neighbours

We live 2 miles out of the village, in a 9 house group. We are all white, all old and all boring. At last a semi with a massive plot, has been sold to a YOUNG couple. Kim and Sam are very welcome and are certainly very different to the rest of us.

I found Sam today under an axle off his van. Surrounded by other axels he was busy doing renovation which I neither could understand nor replicate. He was proud to announce his intention of doing the renovation of the wrecked house himself. He is a carpenter by trade but plumbing and electrics seem to be no problem to him.

Their priority has been surprisingly to get their veg plot going and cabbages, marrows and broccoli are all visible. Their rabbit protection seems to be working as their plants are growing away. This is definitely gong to be a working rather than pretty garden.

They are an interesting, open and valuable member of our little group and I’m looking forward to getting to know them better.

Cheryl came and I returned to a more normal and therefore positive session. I did 2*2*1/4 in the rain, stretched and then did a really positive, not touched by Cheryl , 1+1

Last night, Garry and Mary delivered my latest plant deliveries of more MJ bed fillers. The garage door was open, they assumed I was out, so they dumped them and ran. I was sat in the office using my headphones so couldn't hear their car arriving. Didn't think of ringing the door bell. Fanx !!!

    0306 Duffy

I am disabled. This sometimes frustrates the **** out of me. I can't do the chores, the “Blue tasks”, “Blokes jobs” that I always did. For the four years here, I have used friends locally or friends visiting and staying to do most of these tasks. I have never been that sure how “voluntary” these were. Many people are good friends and can see my frustration: they are “happy” to help. I have a regular “CHORES list” I have even employed people, when the task was too difficult, involved or technical. Have tool…..can do.

During the last visit from my oldest friend, DJK, he was amazed at how short and insignificant the list was. He saw this as a great sign of my integration locally.

Then I met Duffy. He was introduced to me by Bo, whose recommendation says without him having to say it, “this bloke works, is thorough and is keen”. He comes at 1730 for short evening tasks on the way home. He has not been a disappointment and is very much welcome.

Last night he hung another hand rail in the garage (allowing me to choose which one to use based on which car is absent). We started our tour of my 200 trees to giver each of them a 5,000 service. We pulled off suckers, loosened straps on posts, cleared the horsepoo and tacked the straps to the post. In 30 minutes we did maybe 15 trees. It is going to take a long time.  He will hopefully come back Saturday.

oon after we started staking posts around the horse poo, DP turned up for his evening nosh. He seemed bored and kept looking at the chore list for something to do. He did the outside tap, which made everyone happy.

    0206 Unpredictable rain.

This morning the forecast said weather would be fine until this evening. 30 minutes outside base camp it rained. We were luckily under an over hanging tree so we just waited and listened to Radio 5. Joy

I do try not to put too much weight on these forecasts but inevitably I don’t manage NOT to. As it was 16  deg AND the governors meeting tonight, I wore my summer long “non Cheryl “ trousers.

Eric came and his thinking, helps me untangle mine. Priorities and dismissing that which you are “impotent” over was today’s theme.

0106 : feeling sick and headache

Cheryl came for another poor session. I managed three lef to right moves and even those Cheryl had to click my left knee locked on occasions.

For the first time for many years, I had a stress pang. Like it had happened during times of stress or exhaustion,. I had a midday headache and feelings of nausea. Immediately Dr H, correctly diagnosed it, rightly recommending sleep as the remedy. I went to bed at 14.00, cancelled my Maths caching and awoke at 17.00 feeling a million times better. I wonder if I will be able to sleep?

    3105 **** fayre

Mark, the gardener, came today to plant our goodies from Garry and Mary. The pots of lupins. Guardinia, lavatera Etc were firstly placed them out, all professional like,(always in groups of odd numbers of plants) then I left Mark to put them in. I asked him to spray as I left him as the wind was virtually non-existent. As normal he did what he wanted and he gave the roadside hedge a “flat top” which looks very professional. Not on today’s list but necessary.

H planned to spend day with her grandma, so I planned “Dickfest”, the village fete. Luckily for me, whilst at Bobs admiring his new lawn mower, Ruth said she’d be happy to accompany me. As we approached the sports field location, I could smell the burgers and my hunger at 14.00, increased. “Gills grills” served a great ¼ pounder and cheese. Half a cow served n a bap. After half, I wasn’t very hungry, but apart from feeding Bramble, I had nowhere to throw it.

We had a true middle aged evening of TV. The two reality big shots both had their finals.

    3005 Cheryl poor session

In the evening I went out with DP to my current favourite restaurant  “JD Youngs”. He had his entirely predictable steak and I tried the korma curry. It was very tasty and not just loads of cream. As part of our calorie controlled diet, I had a fruit salad and DP had a chocolate and hazel pie.

Having forgotten to hit the cashpoint, we went home to watch Jonathon Woss. DP was that impressed y my conversation, he fell asleep. Snoring loudly, I quickly woke him up.

    Last two weeks

    Sunday, June 1, 2008, 03:16 PM [General]

    2805 Cheryl

As most of you know Cheryl is an important part of my life. Her generosity, time and effort helps make my life more refreshing enjoyable and fulfilling. She is a wonder woman ands im very happy to know her.

Why she does so many things for me, is a mystery. I have asked her whether it is all a large chore or OK for her. Happily she is OK with them

Today, for example was a case in point. After another poor session (and delivery of loads of poppies from her garden) and nervousness about my guts, we ventured off to Norwich for H birthday presents.

H had left a modest list, which we swept up. The two major presents were also purchased in Norwich. I hope she likes them all.

For lunch we went  to “Waggamama”, which is a Chinese serving and cooking in a very open speedy, bar type place. Having paid every time for the presents with PIN  and chip, this restaurant didn't accept it. I said that I couldn't sign, so I scribbled my name. They were happy. Cheryl enjoyed her meal, again and I didn't, again!

    270508 Guesswork

My mate , Irishman John Leen, from my Swiss hospital, has helped enormously by ordering my new wheel to replace the one I smashed. It was ordered from Germany, to be sent directly here to avoid Swiss duties etc

He then went on leave, hoping or praying that he had done enough. He sent me an email on 1405 telling me it was fixed and if not, call Frau Grunnmann, this lady in the factory if there was a problem.

I phoned with my rusty German and she proceeded to gabble and in all ways be typically unhelpful and officious. She was tapping away on her PC, trying to look for delivery notes, orders or any confirmation of what had happened. In my most naive moment for years, I suggested that she took my number aqnd she could call me back when she had found out what had happened.

I took the phone outside, whilst doing some gardening, to receive her call. All of a sudden NOTHING HAPPENED.

I then thought an email would be preferable. I wrote a simple email and then to whom should I send it? I guessed and sent it to three different addresses and only one was rejected. My conclusion therefore is that she has it. (3 hours later still no answer)

She phoned at 14.00 (5 hours later) and her supplier had delivered the wrong bit and that’s why it hat been sent. They say I must wait another week minimum. Well I’m not stuck here because of the wheels but the weather!!

We had an amazing thunder storm at 0300. It woke us both up and the lightening was fab, we had one break right over us. The shower light went on, of course!!

    260508 Extremes

My god, H was keen to get to where ever she was going tonight, as she shot out of the door. She has left the bread mix on the side and the bread machine is totally inaccessible as well as incomprehensible. My excuse for not knowing HOW to use it, is that I can't reach it and I’m sticking to that excuse!! Probably a good thing anyway. It only has a 12 hour timer and I would have been woken by “bread activity” at 0500 as it beeped its completion.

We only have one friend who deals with kids in the way, I think I would have. At our house warming party, they got a babysitter in and came to enjoy an adult party as adults. When visiting them, they make sure kids are used for serving and greeting, then whoosh they’ve silently gone to bed. No fuss, no arguing just gone. Fantastic. We therefore can talk to each other without fear of interruption or upsetting the “language police”. When the PARENTS come here for evening dinner, no sign of the KIDS. Nrrrrr.

H has bought another hoover. We now have one to scrub the tiled floors. It’s an amazing piece of equipment that looks like something very modern and space like. H is like a “pig in ****” with it and I think it will be used often to clear up all the crap I create. I just hope that the limestone doesn't become a cave or we have stalagmites growing!!

    250508 Taking the hint

Yes, there are things I don’t put on my blog cos I don’t want people to know/see/hear. Amazing that I have evolved into such a sensitive caring person. Who would of guessed it?

Exactly as forecast, the weather has turned cooler. More importantly we have some blessed rain. I can almost hear the plants slurping as they greedily drink in the wonderful rain. We have had too much dry weather recently. My garden needs a drink. Though tonight as my 18.30 “Water the plants” alarm went off on my phone, I did regret NOT having to go out and do that daily chore. (looking at the weather forecast, it looks like I wont need to do it for a while.)

I’m hoping that my theory about the daisies is true. I can only see the oxeye daisies growing on the wetter parts of the meadow, near the patio run-off by the house. So now we have rain, the daisies need to appear.

Cheryl was here for a rainy and unproductive session.

Jade came for her maths lesson. We did MEDIAN, MODE and MEAN then distance / time graphs. I really enjoy helping her to try to learn the basics. We use “Teachers TV “as a source of a 15 minute video to introduce a topic. Then we pause throughout the video to test ideas, concepts and learning. She only comes IF SHE wants to. She has decided to delay her “MJ times table” test  until the end of the term. Now I understand a very small part of “parental emotions”. There is nothing I would like to do more than go for lunch in the Half Moon with her and sister, but we wont go until she cracks her times tables. I try to give sometimes believe me!!.

    240508 salmon and asparagus

Cheryl and I managed yesterday, at last to do a full set. A slow but correct 1+1 then 1+1. After worrying about it, I asked her to time me. A single lap of walking 12 metres took 5 minutes. Watch out Linford Christie.

Last night Bo took me to a footie match to celebrate a clearly very popular guy, who had died working for EDF, in an accident. His wife Carolyn knew me from delivering horse poo. She nearly joined the camp of women to which the answer to the following question is embarrassment. “When is the baby due ?”. thankfully I actually thought before opening my mouth. She is the sole member of another club. “Women from whom I refused a drink” as I was busy organising my purchase of our next round..

Needing to pee, Bo suggested we used the normal gents. Willing to try anything, Bo got me in and then the toilet doors were too narrow and the pissoir too high. Then Bo did something to solve it. I opened the valve, whilst he massaged the bag like he was milking a cow and pushed the piss up hill out of the bag. Would you do that? He is a VERY special friend. We celebrate our differences. It is this very fact, that I enjoy so much.

It was great to see Bob and Ruth at the same event. They knew loads of the kids and parents through their two daughters.

We had tried to go out this evening, but being a bank holiday, everywhere was fully booked. H as ever, decided to cook. We had a great meal of salmon and asparagus. David and I were quiet as the three women competed with each other to entertain us the most.

230508 Inspirational people who don’t realise their impact

We went to see some neighbours last night. The original plan was to give them a list of perennials in December that I wanted. Then I would go back in May and pick them up. As normal with “Mr Decisive” himself - MJ , the original list had been cut down, added to and volumes adjusted. I.e. it was crap. Added to this confusion was a “woman in a handbag shop” being shown round the nursery by a man whose passion and knowledge of perennials is awesome.

Instead of a 30 minute stay to get our goodies allocated to a trailer for delivery on a Thursday (for planting by our gardener), we were there 2 hours. Added to this enjoyment was DP arriving to talk to people he had known for 20 years and two fantastic daughters, one going for a jog, the other supporting the process.

Despite numerous subtle and getting less subtle, hints we were eventually given drinks. Mary, remembering my normal wish, gave me a pint glass of lightly flavoured water. Having planned lupins, delphiniums, hollyhocks and other normal conservative, MJ plants, we left having trimmed volumes of these but added artichokes and other not yet understood plants including a red leaved rhubarb look-a-like. My £100 budget being smashed !! I hear you all saying “What did you take a woman for?”

Gary had talked last week about how content he was in his stress less life. How he enjoyed watching friends of his charging around, but never being actually sure what more they achieved with these longer days and stress-full lives. He explained that this week he had been head-hunted. Their winter lives were dominated by grave digging. This was a job that had to have priority, so meant they had to fit other activities around it. A very rich neighbour(10 acres, Mansion and 100m from them) has offered them 5 days gardening work per week. This could be shared between days of the week and the two of them, as they saw fit. Flexibility.

    Good luck to them.

220508 Being attacked by the police

Do you think I look the hooligan type? Here I was innocently walking Bramble and suddenly a young female policewoman jumped out of he hedge firing questions at me like the Spanish inquisition. (I know you will understand how difficult it was for me to chat to a young lady in uniform).

It turns out she is the younger daughter of builder  Mervyn and sister of Karl, my “always up for a chat” building labourer. My god the Dickleburgh families are big , complicated and inter-related. When she told me her surname was “Mark” I innocently asked if she was related to “George” my recently deceased neighbour. “Yes”.

Once home Jez phoned to tell me he was featured in the “Sunday Mail”. I quickly found it on www and his work with obese patients was a good read. He was rightfully chuffed to have made national news. Good lad.

    210508 Young people

Today I saw Steve, the chicken farmer. He is 20x and he filled me again with hope for our country as he explained his work and efforts to do this and that. I'm still not sure whether unrealistic dreams at his age is a good thing to raise the bar, or a bad thing to underachieve your potential. This discussion is the theme of many sales conferences.

Another crap Cheryl time. I only managed to go the Left to right 4 times. Well nagged Cheryl . my left knee is very weak, which H maybe right in blaming my lack of standing exercise. I will check up o see if I can still do them.

200508 T-shirt politics in our house

As you’ll know, I have loads of t-shirts. Some very valuable old ones like Euro 96 or World Cup 94 or recent (normally black) tour t shirts. I have 2 piles of 20 shirts and they are each 25 cm deep. Of course I take one of the top ones every day. H washes 2/3 times a week so I could have Mondays t-shirt back n the top on Thursday. Am I a real pain if sometimes I try to take one from other than the top?

I have recently become a “pain-in-the-arse” regarding tour t-shirts.(add it to the list, I hear you shout). When gigging as a teenager to Friars or Hammersmith, I was broke could afford the t-shirts so used to olook longingly at the t-shirt boards, thinking “One day…”. That day has arrived.

I agree with PRO GARD. If you ever see a wet one you will be reminded what they really are. They are RATS with fluffy tails and I wonder who would be feeding the local rats ? In Devon they are eating them. I was shooting them at 15.
